Isomag Bearing Isolators Seal Lufkin Marine Gearboxes on Tugboats

Updated: Jan 28, 2020

Reinhauer Tugboat

In 2015, Reinhauer Transportation Company, based in Staten Island, New York, reaching out to Isomag to help them find a solution for their Lufkin RS2850HG marine gearboxes on their tugboat fleet stationed all around the United States. The problem was, these Lufkin gearboxes were factory installed with lip seals, and these lip seals would wear out quickly. When the lip seals wore out, the Lufkin gearbox would leak oil, and water (predominately salt and brackish water) would enter the bearing housing, significantly shortening the life span of the gearbox, causing downtime for the boats. On top of that, the lip seal wears a grove into the shaft, making it necessary to either refurbish the shaft or get a new one when it's time to repair. Regular labyrinth isolators don't scar the shaft but perform poorly in forced lube systems or flooded environments.

Isomag bearing isolators are a positive seal that wont damage the shafts of your gearbox, and work in horizontal or vertical up or down positions for the right angle gearboxes. Isomag bearing isolators also work perfectly in grease lubrication environments. Isomag was able to design and drop ship custom bearing isolators to their repair shops in less than 48 hours.

A brochure for Isomag bearing isolators for gearboxes can be found here. Also as a reminder, Isomag bearing isolators can be custom made to fit your machine. Contact our customer service team and we will help you find the ideal solution for your needs.
