Georgia Pacific Paper in Cedar Springs, Georgia, was in need of a better bearing protection solution for their Beloit Shark A paper refiner. Paper refiners are critical in creating uniform paper fibers before being sent off to the paper machine for production. The maintenance team wanted to maintain a flooded lubrication condition with a seal that would outperform the traditional lip seal.
Georgia Pacific chose one of the best rebuilders in the southeast, Atlanta Gear Works to oversee the rebuild. AGW's professional staff decided to go with Isomag's V6S bolted flange design, the preferred bearing isolator for flooded housings. AGW's craftsmanship can be seen in Figure 1 above.
Isomag's unique magnetic bearing isolator technology provides positive, liquid-tight sealing without using the shaft of the equipment as the primary sealing surface (like lip seals). The advantage is 75,000 hours of continuous run time without the egress of lubrication or ingress of outside contaminants. This life cycle is about 25 times greater than the average lip seal. By switching to Isomag, Georgia Pacific will see vast improvement on the bearing life in this refiner.
